Letters on Harry Potter: How Dramione Brought Me Back to Reading
Starting strong with my love for fanfiction, welcome to my Substack.
When I was little, I watched the Harry Potter movies and loved them completely, so 3 years ago in 2021 when my reader fever began, I decided I wanted to try the books. I bought them one by one with my brother until we had the whole set. Since I live in South America, they’re all in Spanish, and I thought it wouldn't be a problem cause hey, that’s my native language. Boy, I was wrong.
This is how my reading went:
Book one: BORING AS HELL.
Book two: BOOORING. BORING. BORING.
Book three: AMAZING, LIVE LOVE LAUGH THE MARAUDERS.
Book four: Only got through 50 pages.
I stopped trying to read and just DNFed the rest of the series. Still, I was so in love with this magical world I wanted to somehow read about it, so I ended up on Dramione.
I must confess that I’m a sucker for Dramione fics (sorry not sorry), many people may disagree with me, and that’s fine, but those of you who have read any Dramione fic know that they leave you obsessed. And so I started reading fics nonstop (if you want recommendations you can tell me and I’ll happily make a list with the different tropes.)
Back in that year, I remember reading solely on Wattpad.
But oh well, that was the pandemic effect. Time passed, school consumed my whole time and I dropped the wizarding world.
Fast-forward to this year, I was looking at my never-ending TBR and suddenly remembered about Dramione. While looking for stories to read, I found Isolation by the super-talented Bex Chan, and I fell in love with these characters all over again.
As I read a few more fics I realized I hadn’t even read Manacled by SenLinYu which is one of the classics, but also that before diving into it, I needed a bit more context to fully enjoy and appreciate the story.
So I decided to start reading the whole series from scratch, all in English from my Kindle. And believe me when I say it’s the best decision I’ve made.
In the next letters, I’ll be doing one of the things I love the most in the world: writing non-stop about books.
Welcome to my new section Letters On Harry Potter where I share my thoughts and opinions on each of the books. I’ll send the first one very soon.
Sincerely yours,
M
